Overview

The Banded Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia trifasciata), often referred to in the hobby as the Jewel Rainbowfish or Juwelen-Regenbogenfisch, is one of the most popular and visually striking freshwater species available. Captive-bred strains, frequently labeled as DNZ (Deutsche Nachzucht) in European markets, ensure healthy, adaptable individuals that thrive in home aquariums without impacting wild populations.

Distribution and Habitat

Native to the tropical river systems of the Northern Territory and Queensland in Australia, these rainbowfish inhabit clear, flowing streams, shaded billabongs, and rivers. They are typically found swimming among dense aquatic vegetation, submerged tree roots, and sunken logs, which provide both shelter and foraging grounds.

Description of Banded Rainbowfish

Body shape:

They possess a deep-bodied, laterally compressed profile. As they mature, especially the males, they develop a pronounced arched back and a deep chest, giving them a robust and powerful appearance.

Color:

Their coloration is highly variable depending on their specific geographic origin. Generally, they feature a prominent dark mid-lateral band, with scales reflecting brilliant metallic hues of blue, silver, and green, often beautifully accented by horizontal orange or reddish stripes.

Barbels:

This species does not possess any barbels.

Snout:

They have a somewhat pointed snout with a relatively small, terminal mouth that is perfectly adapted for feeding on insects at the surface and mid-water zooplankton.

Eyes:

Their eyes are large, alert, and dark-centered, typical of highly active, visual schooling fish.

Fins:

Males boast elongated, brightly colored dorsal and anal fins, often displaying vibrant reds or oranges. Females have shorter, more rounded, and generally more subdued fins.

The Tail:

The tail is deeply forked and muscular, designed for swift and sustained swimming in moderate river currents.

Temper

They are peaceful and generally good-natured. However, due to their large adult size and fast-paced swimming habits, they can sometimes unintentionally startle very shy, small, or slow-moving tank mates.

Sociality

Banded Rainbowfish are highly social schooling fish. To encourage their natural behavior, reduce stress, and witness their optimal coloration and sparring displays, they should be kept in groups of at least 6 to 8 individuals, ideally with a mix of males and females.

Activity

They are exceptionally active fish. They will constantly patrol the upper and middle levels of the aquarium, rarely staying still during daylight hours.

Keeping and Caring for Banded Rainbowfish

Tank size:

A minimum tank length of 120 cm (4 feet) or a volume of about 200 liters is required to accommodate their active swimming habits and their adult size of up to 15 cm.

Water Parameters:

Temperature

They thrive in tropical temperatures ranging from 24 to 28°C.

pH

They are quite adaptable but prefer slightly acidic to slightly alkaline water, ideally between 6.5 and 8.0.

Hardness

A moderate hardness level between 8 and 20 dGH is recommended for their long-term health.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate

Ammonia and Nitrite must always be at 0 ppm. Nitrates should be kept below 20 ppm through regular, substantial water changes, as they are sensitive to degrading water quality.

Lighting

Moderate to bright lighting is recommended. Good lighting will help highlight the iridescent, metallic colors of their scales.

Water flow

A moderate water flow is highly appreciated, as it simulates the flowing rivers of their natural Australian habitats.

Decorations and Plants

Provide plenty of open swimming space in the center and upper regions of the tank. Plant the background and sides densely with hardy aquatic plants. Driftwood branches and smooth river rocks make excellent, natural-looking decor.

Diet

They are omnivorous by nature. In the wild, their diet consists of insects, small crustaceans, and plant matter. In the aquarium, they are not fussy and will readily accept high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and a variety of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.

Some Feeding Tips

Feed them small amounts 1 to 2 times daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes. Ensure a varied diet that includes some vegetable matter, such as spirulina flakes, to maintain their vibrant colors and overall health.

Breeding

Banded Rainbowfish are egg scatterers. To breed them, set up a dedicated breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or artificial spawning mops. Condition the adult group with high-quality live and frozen foods. They usually spawn over a period of several days, releasing a few eggs each morning. It is best to remove the parents or transfer the spawning mop to a separate rearing tank to prevent the adults from eating the eggs. The fry will hatch in 7 to 10 days and require very fine foods like infusoria or liquid fry food until they are large enough to accept newly hatched brine shrimp.
