Taxonomy and Distribution

Mesonauta festivus belongs to the family Cichlidae. Native to the Amazon and Paraguay River basins in South America, these fish are typically found in slow-moving rivers and flooded forests. They are closely related to Pterophyllum species and share similar ecological preferences for environments with heavy vegetation and submerged wood.

Behavior and Tank Requirements

Flag Cichlids are social and best kept in pairs or small groups. They are generally peaceful but can become territorial during breeding. A tank of at least 300 liters is recommended to accommodate their size and activity level. Provide a setup with driftwood, rocks, and sturdy plants to create hiding spots and mimic their natural habitat.

Diet and Feeding

These fish are omnivorous and not particularly picky eaters. A balanced diet should include high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Providing occasional vegetable matter or spirulina-based foods helps maintain their overall health and coloration.

Compatibility and Breeding

They are suitable for large community tanks with other peaceful or semi-aggressive fish of similar size, such as larger tetras, corydoras, or other South American cichlids. Breeding occurs on a flat surface like a leaf or stone. Both parents exhibit strong brood care, guarding the eggs and fry with significant dedication.
