Taxonomy and Habitat

Caridina woltereckae belongs to the Atyidae family. It is endemic to Lake Towuti in Sulawesi, where it lives in a stable, alkaline environment. The lake is characterized by high mineral content and consistent, warm temperatures. Replicating this habitat is essential for the long-term health of the shrimp.

Water Parameters

These shrimp require a highly specific, stable environment. The water must be maintained at a pH between 7.5 and 8.5 with a temperature range of 26 to 29 degrees Celsius. Low levels of nitrates and ammonia are critical, as these shrimp are extremely sensitive to fluctuations in water quality.

Feeding

In the aquarium, they primarily graze on biofilm and algae found on rocks and driftwood. Supplementing their diet with high-quality, specialized shrimp food or mineral-rich pellets is recommended to ensure they receive essential nutrients. Avoid overfeeding, as it can quickly degrade the water quality.

Tank Mates and Behavior

Due to their delicate nature and specific needs, it is best to keep these shrimp in a species-only tank. Introducing fish or other aggressive tank mates may cause stress or lead to predation. They are generally peaceful but require ample hiding spots among rocks to feel secure.

Molting and Breeding

Molting is a vulnerable time for these shrimp. Ensuring consistent water parameters and proper mineral balance is vital for a successful molt. Breeding in captivity is notoriously difficult and requires pristine conditions. Females carry a small number of large eggs, which hatch into fully developed miniature shrimplets, bypassing the larval stage.
