Taxonomy and Identification
This shrimp belongs to the genus Caridina and is endemic to the Lake Towuti region in Sulawesi, Indonesia. While commonly referred to as the Blossom Red, it is part of a complex group of Sulawesi shrimp species. Identification can be complex as various color patterns exist, and scientific classification of these specific populations is still evolving, leading to a moderate degree of taxonomic uncertainty.

Natural Habitat
In the wild, these shrimp inhabit the rocky substrates of Lake Towuti. They are adapted to high-temperature, high-pH, and low-nutrient environments. The water in their natural habitat is clear, well-oxygenated, and rich in minerals, which is essential for their health and successful molting process.

Aquarium Care and Water Parameters
Maintaining the correct water chemistry is critical. A high pH between 7.5 and 8.5 and a temperature range of 26-30 degrees Celsius are non-negotiable. They require a stable, cycled aquarium with minimal organic waste. Sulawesi-specific mineral salts are often used to recreate the specific water hardness and mineral content found in their native lake.

Feeding and Tank Mates
They primarily graze on biofilm and aufwuchs found on rocks and hard surfaces. In captivity, supplement their diet with high-quality, specialized shrimp foods that promote biofilm growth. Due to their delicate nature and specific water requirements, they are best kept in a species-only tank. Introducing fish or other invertebrates often leads to competition or stress.

Molting and Breeding
Successful molting is the primary indicator of a healthy environment. If the water parameters deviate, the shrimp may struggle to shed their exoskeleton. Breeding occurs in freshwater without a larval stage, with females carrying a small number of large eggs. The offspring are miniature versions of the adults and require stable conditions and abundant biofilm to survive.
