Gymnocorymbus ternetzi (Golden Mourning Tetra)

Overview

The Golden Mourning Tetra, often referred to as the Gold Skirt Tetra or White Skirt Tetra, is a stunning leucistic or naturally golden color morph of the well-known Black Skirt Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi). Highly sought after for its hardiness and active nature, this fish is an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. They bring a lively dynamic to the middle levels of the aquarium and thrive in well-maintained community setups.

Distribution and Habitat

While the Golden Mourning Tetra is a captive-bred color variant and does not occur naturally in the wild, its ancestral species originates from the subtropical river basins of South America, specifically the Paraguay and Guaporé Rivers. In their natural habitat, they inhabit slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters shaded by dense forest canopies. They prefer areas with plenty of roots and submerged branches for cover.

Description of Golden Mourning Tetra

Body shape:

This tetra possesses a deep, laterally compressed, almost diamond-shaped body. The front half of the body is relatively stocky, tapering sharply towards the caudal peduncle, giving it a distinctive, slightly rounded profile.

Color:

Unlike the wild type which features dark vertical bands, the Golden Mourning Tetra is characterized by a translucent, pale golden to whitish-pink coloration. The internal organs and skeletal structure are often slightly visible through their shimmering, semi-transparent scales.

Barbels:

Like all species within the Characidae family, the Golden Mourning Tetra does not possess barbels.

Snout:

The snout is relatively short and blunt, featuring a small, terminal mouth equipped with tiny teeth adapted for an omnivorous diet.

Eyes:

They have large, prominent eyes with a dark central pupil surrounded by a reflective, silvery-gold iris, providing excellent vision in dimly lit waters.

Fins:

The fins are largely transparent with a subtle golden or white tint. Its most notable feature is the broad, skirt-like anal fin that stretches from the mid-belly all the way to the base of the tail. The dorsal fin is tall and relatively pointed.

The Tail:

The caudal fin (tail) is deeply forked, clear to pale gold in color, and provides the rapid propulsion needed for their active swimming bursts.

Temper

The Golden Mourning Tetra is generally peaceful, making it a great community fish. However, they can exhibit minor fin-nipping tendencies if they are stressed, bored, or kept in groups that are too small. Keeping them in a proper school mitigates this behavior.

Sociality

They are highly social, schooling fish. It is highly recommended to keep them in groups of at least six individuals, though more is always better. When kept in a school, they establish a pecking order and focus their attention on each other rather than bothering other tank mates. They pair well with other peaceful community fish like Corydoras, smaller Rasboras, and peaceful bottom dwellers.

Activity

These tetras are highly active and will spend the majority of their time darting around the middle and upper levels of the water column. They are diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day.

Keeping and Caring for Golden Mourning Tetra

Tank size:

A minimum tank size of 60 liters (15 gallons) is required for a small school, though a 20-gallon long aquarium or larger is highly recommended to provide adequate horizontal swimming space for their active lifestyle.

Water Parameters:

Temperature

They are quite adaptable and thrive in temperatures ranging from 20°C to 26°C (68°F - 79°F).

pH

A pH level between 6.0 and 8.0 is acceptable, though they do best in slightly acidic to neutral water (around 6.5 - 7.5).

Hardness

They can tolerate a wide range of water hardness, generally between 5 and 20 dGH.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate

Ammonia and Nitrite must always be at 0 ppm. Nitrates should be kept below 20 ppm through regular water changes and tank maintenance.

Lighting

Moderate to dim lighting is preferred. Bright, intense lighting can wash out their pale colors and induce stress. Floating plants can be used to diffuse strong lights.

Water flow

A gentle to moderate water flow mimics their natural slow-moving river habitats perfectly.

Decorations and Plants

A dark substrate will beautifully contrast with their golden, translucent bodies. The tank should be well-planted along the back and sides, utilizing plants like Java Fern, Amazon Swords, and Cryptocoryne, while leaving a large open swimming area in the center. Driftwood and leaf litter can also be added to simulate their natural environment.

Diet

The Golden Mourning Tetra is a non-fussy omnivore. In the aquarium, they will readily accept high-quality flake foods, micro-pellets, and freeze-dried options. To ensure optimal health and coloration, their diet should be supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.

Some Feeding Tips

Feed them small amounts 1 to 2 times a day—only what they can consume within two to three minutes. Overfeeding can quickly lead to poor water quality, which these fish are sensitive to.

Breeding

Breeding the Golden Mourning Tetra is relatively easy. They are egg-scatterers that provide no parental care. To breed them, set up a separate breeding tank with dim lighting, soft, slightly acidic water, and plenty of fine-leaved plants (like Java Moss) or a spawning mop. Introduce a conditioned pair or a small group. Spawning usually occurs in the early morning. Once eggs are scattered, the adult fish must be removed immediately, as they will eat their own eggs. The fry will hatch in 24-36 hours and become free-swimming a few days later, at which point they should be fed infusoria or liquid fry food.

Conclusion

The Golden Mourning Tetra is a fantastic, visually unique addition to any freshwater aquarium. Their hardiness, coupled with their active and peaceful schooling behavior, makes them a joy to watch and easy to care for. Provided with a proper school, clean water, and a balanced diet, these shimmering golden fish will thrive and bring life to your community tank for years to come.
